Black, white and green - commission of art

Life is full of twists and turns, but one thing that has been constant my whole life is my immense need to create with fiber. So when I was asked if I could make textile art for a young lady that is transitioning into adulthood. Of course I said, YES as creating gives me tremendous joy and satisfaction. It truly takes me to magical places. Transforming a thread spool or a yarn ball into an object is simply the essence of my existence.

What an honor to be asked to make textile art for a trendy young person.

She wanted more sophisticated vibe and feel to her space, as she is taking the first steps in developing her own interior style.

The brief was,

  • Black, white and green circles

  • The work needed to accommodate for her impulse urge to rearrange her space regularly

I decided the work would be made up by nine 5"x5" canvases to give the possibility of rearranging the art with enough possibilities that she would find space for these in any place she would move to in the future. They also needed to travel well, as the plan is to explore different cities and countries before finding the perfect location to settle down.

Truly love this age!

After our initial conversation, I was so excited.

I thought I could just sit down and let my imagination run wild. Easy peasy, this will be so cool, but then I started overthinking. I stared at the blank canvases and thought of my responsibilities to make something unique, something amazing, something that she would like and want to hang up!

Pressure, but pressure is good! Right!

May I introduce

Circles of life #I

2022
9 works, each 6"x6"x1"
Mixed media/Embroidery (fabric, threads, yarn, acrylic, Icelandic rocks, beads, ink and feathers)

All nine canvases can stand alone or be mixed and matched into smaller groups. The only thing needed is some small picture hanging strips and the client goes off to find her perfect combination. I think this work gives opportunities to grow as she moves houses, towns or countries while finding her space in this world.

Here are some examples of different rearrangements!

3 works displayed horizontal

3 works displayed vertical

4 works displayed together

6 works displayed together

Amazing how much the commissioned piece changes as it is arranged into different compositions. It can be hung up in a small space between doorways, spread out or displayed together. It can be arrange by colours. All depending on the space, lighting and mood. That's what I love about this work.

The client can influence the art with her imagination.

So let's see how she hung it up!

Completely different to anything I had imagined.

Right!

How cool is this.

Apparently she wanted a diamond and she got one!

My thoughts

This project was a blast. I hit the briefing and the client is over the moon.

Although this piece pushed me more into the direction of mixed media, threads, beads and stitching is never far away. It felt extremely freeing to just go with the flow and finding my inner glow.

This project truly changed the way I think about my practice.

Interested in working with me, please reach out. I would love to hear from you.
